Snapshot
As I finish the last set of abdominal circuits, I feel the small beads of sweat dripping down the sides of my forehead. It felt like tiny drops of rain streaming down my face. When the little high-pitched timer beeped, my ears fill with the sounds of moaning and groaning, from the whole volleyball team. We all fell to the floor in a split second and we press our sizzling bodies down to the cool floor. The gym floor is ordinarily described as dirty and disgusting, but at the time, it became every team member’s new best friend.

My Recent Loss (my + 175 word entry)
A person that I greatly admire and look up to is my great-grandfather, Leo Antion, whom I refer to as Giddo. Giddo means “grandfather” in Arabic, so I guess he really is my great Giddo. But, during this past spring, i experienced a tragic loss within my family. My great grandfather, Giddo, past away at age 97. I admire him for many reasons including the fact that he survived many hardships in his life and turned out to be an extremely remarkable person.
He was born in Syria in December of 1908 and, after his father died, he came to the United States when he was around 2-years-old, with his mother and older brother and sister. When they arrived in the United States, they had no money to survive, so his mother married a cruel man in order to put food on the table. The step-father beat the mother and all of her kids every evening when he returned home from work. Then, just a few years later, he was orphaned at age 7, by the death of his mother. Since he had a nasty step-father, he went to live with his sister who had been forced by their circumstances, to get married at the age of thirteen! Can you even imagine getting married that young?
My Giddo only attended school through the seventh grade as there were no laws against children working. He grew up dirt poor and needed to work to make money. He got his first job at age eight, selling vegetables off of a horse-drawn cart. Leo smoked from age 8 until 55 when he suddenly decided to quit. His life forced him grow up very quickly!
Leo had a few different jobs. He initially had tried to be a ships operator in Morse code, but could not pass the exam. Instead, he worked in a tin hot mill for eighteen years before he went to work as a welder for a ship building company when World War II began. He worked for Westinghouse wiring motors for two years. Then, Giddo left that job to go into business running a gas station /motel /restaurant for nine years, with his brother. His final job was an electrician.
He had a very rough life, but in the end, he came out as a kind, tender-hearted person. Leo grew up poor, worked hard, had four children and sent each of them to college. He sacrificed a lot in life so that his children and grandchildren would have a better life than he had.

Leo grew up poor, worked hard, married (my great grandmother Freda whom is now 94), had four children and sent each of them to college. He sacrificed much of his life so that his children and grandchildren would have a better life than he had. When I think about my great-grandfather, I realize how lucky I am for all that I have in life!
The End!
